Program Description

Colour & Design Fundamentals
Students will learn about colour systems, value relationships, colour psychology and the use of colour in interiors. They will consider the principles and elements of design and how they relate to interior spaces. They will learn how to assemble colour and material boards for client review and presentations.

History of Interior Design, Furnishings & Styles, Architecture
Students will review architectural styles from ancient to modern and understand the way history affects today's buildings. Historic room settings, furniture design cabinetry and window coverings will be studied. Romantic revivals, Bauhaus, French and English country styles and the work of modern designers will be reviewed.

Product Knowledge
This survey course gives the student an understanding of the materials used in interior design. Textile knowledge and carpeting coupled with an understanding of hard surface materials such as tile, marble and laminate is essential when selecting proper finishes for residential and commercial interiors.

Drafting & Drawing (Residential & Commercial)
The techniques of drafting and graphic representation are the established language of architecture. Students learn to use hand drafting tools and instruments developing skill with line weight and lettering; an understanding of architectural symbols; and the use of metric and imperial scales. They further develop their drafting skills preparing site plans, floor plans, elevations, and sections as well as how to incorporate construction details into a set of drawings.

Space Planning (Residential & Commercial)
Space planning concepts, design criteria, client requirements, planning for individual functions and code requirements for commercial use, are introduced in this course. Students will apply these concepts to both residential and commercial interiors. Lighting considerations and mill work detailing when planning for commercial environments such as restaurants and office spaces will also be included as part of this program.

Kitchen & Bath Design
The kitchen and bath industry is growing and becoming more complex with the use of new materials and products. We seek to address this growing emphasis on the kitchen and bath industry in the current residential market place with the use of the N.K.B.A. (National Kitchen & Bath Association) model of standards. Students will understand the use of standardized measurements, ducting, plumbing and electrical.

Drawing & Rendering
The ability to present ideas clearly to a client is extremely important. Students are introduced to the methods and techniques of composing presentation drawings for interior and exterior spaces. Using one and two point perspective, drawings will be rendered using colour, highlight and shadow techniques and then animated by the addition of people and foliage.

Field Trips
Field trips to industry related businesses expose students to products and finishes that are available locally. Sales representatives educate students in the practical application of materials used in interior design. Drapery, flooring, kitchen installations and products, lighting and cabinet hardware establishments are visited.

Embellishments
This hands-on course will give students a chance to discover and use a variety of surface materials. Finishing techniques such as faux wall techniques, tile and screen-printing will be explored.

Introduction to Computer Aided Design
PDA prides itself on using Macintosh computers and the latest Macintosh operating system in all our Lab environments. All CADD work is done using the industry standard cross platform drafting program VectorWorks software.
Interior Design Students are introduced to the operating system of the VectorWorks Program. They will learn how to generate floor plans and elevations using industry standard guidelines.

Computer Aided Design
Computer skills are further enhanced as students prepare a number of design plans while learning more about VectorWorks software applications. They study spatial design, room layouts and traffic patterns for homes and generate design plans and elevations. Later they develop construction documents, incorporating construction details, building sections, schedules and legends for residential and commercial buildings. The use of a furniture library for inclusion in their commercial drawings will be demonstrated.

3-D CADD Modeling
Explore the three-dimensional environment of the Vector Works program. Students develop 3D models while learning the basics of object creation, lighting, textures and rendering modes. These techniques are incorporated into presentation renderings of residential homes and commercial projects.

Construction Theory
Technical systems play a primary and defining role in architectural design at the conceptual stage. These courses introduce students to the principles of building construction, wood frame systems, products and terminology.

In the second year construction theory becomes detailed. Subjects covered include structural forces, building loads, types of skeletal systems, foundations and building envelope technology. The course will also cover specifications, environmental issues, mechanical and electrical systems, codes and by-laws.

Model Building
Design and construction considerations become more apparent when physical scale models are created. A model expresses visually the relationship between the elements of a building, the floor plan and the site. Students will construct several types of models using a variety of materials.

Project Management
In the first year students learn how to manage a small job, preparing a letter of agreement, budget and pricing. Later, students examine contract administration as it applies to a building project; they will investigate time lines, the scheduling of trades and consider the tendering process.

Building Code (Section 3 & 9)
Building codes set standards within a given jurisdiction for all building designs to adhere to. Students learn to understand and apply code requirements. They will familiarize themselves with accessibility, fire protection and occupant safety in housing and small buildings.

Estimating & Take-Off
Learn to estimate building costs and learn the basic "per square foot" method, as well as an accurate material supply count. Consideration is given to current market prices and the cost advantages/ disadvantages of various building and finishing materials.

Portfolio Preparation
The ability to successfully market yourself will greatly enhance your job prospects. A good portfolio is an essential tool in today's marketplace. Using 11" x 17" format, students will organize and re-touch their work for inclusion in their portfolio. Resume writing will also be covered.

Supervised Lab Time
Supervised computer lab time is made available for students throughout the term to work on school assignments outside of instructional time.
