Creating beautiful gardens and landscaping is a work of art. It begins by understanding the whole space and applying the concepts of proportion, form, scale, texture and colour.

Designing a garden involves the solving of logistical problems: where to route a path; should the terrace be in sun or shade; how to integrate an area for a child to play. It is a creation of optimum relationships resulting in a total experience to be on the one hand functional and on the other to delight the senses. The design process fundamentally takes into account the needs, desires and vision of the people who will live in that space. If you enjoy working with plants and landscape materials and wish to learn more about form, space, and composition, this course is for you.

Program Overview
Two semesters in length, the Landscape Design Program provides students with the skills to design a residential space from concept to completion. The student will learn draftsmanship, design principles, site analysis, plant identification, construction, estimating and CAD. They will use a variety of materials while understanding the construction and installation of both hardscape and softscape materials. Throughout the program students will be exposed to industry-related events and field trips.

Students complete a wide variety of projects throughout the program including advertising for print media, posters, corporate identity, editorial design, package design, and self-promotion. The business of graphic design and portfolio preparation are integrated into the program.

Occupational Opportunities
Landscape Designers are employed by Landscape Architects as Landscape Technicians; or they may also be employed by contractors as Designers or Planners; or as self-employed entities.
