Architecture influences the way we feel about space in which we live. It forms the background of our perceptions and influences the way we do things. Architecture is a blending of art, technology and space manipulation. If you enjoy drawing, working with spatial concepts and have a technical interest in structures, this program is for you.
Program Overview
Three semesters in length, the Architectural Building Technology program, provides students with the technical skills needed to create design and construction drawings for commercial and residential buildings. Students learn to create detailed plans using the latest computer aided design software and three-dimensional modeling simulations to enforce special concepts. They develop a thorough knowledge of modern construction techniques and materials' technology. The theories of construction, current products technology and building codes, learned throughout the course, are implemented into their drawings. Detailed construction documents are prepared from the students work to convey information to the building trades and municipal governments. Students learn the principles of planning, the impact of zoning bylaws, project management and model building. Hand drafting techniques are combined with rendering to enable students to present their ideas graphically to clients. Project management, estimating and material take-off as well as portfolio preparation are incorporated into the program.
Occupational Opportunities
The Architectural Building Technology course is designed to prepare students to enter the field of architecture, or for those with a background in construction to enhance their ability to participate more successfully in the industry. This diploma will equip someone new to construction with the background required of a draftsperson in a professional office, a computer aided design (CADD) operator, or (for those with prerequisite qualifications) the skills and portfolio necessary for entrance to an architecture program at the university level. A diploma in architectural building technology will give those students, who already have experience in construction, with technical skills and a design orientation, preparing them for more senior, on-site jobs in construction and the added confidence to operate as an independent builder. Architectural technologists/technicians may work independently or provide technical assistance to professional architects and civil design engineers in conducting research, preparing drawings, architectural models, specifications and contract or supervising construction projects. They may work as manufacturer's representatives, with building suppliers, in property management and development, in municipal planning offices as freelance designers.
