Program Description

Conceptual Thinking I & II
This course will stretch students problem solving and creative abilities. Projects will cover a variety of design areas that include the use of creative typography, graphic illustration, and colour.


Design Fundamentals

Through a series of demonstrations and projects, students will review the elements and principles of design and understand the creative thought process. Colour theory, colour wheel and the differences between RGB & CMYK colour specifications, are covered.


Drawing & Illustration I & II

Students develop an understanding of drawing techniques appropriate to graphic design. Students produce thumbnails roughs while exploring various techniques and mediums. Later they learn to take their original art work and modify it for insertion into a digital environment.


History of Art & Graphic Design I & II

History is a wonderful source of ideas and techniques. Students review the major influences and styles that affected graphic design in the 20th century which brings their attention to the vast historical background of art and design. Particular attention paid to the work of influential artists and the social factors that contributed to their work.


Typography I, II & III

The history, anatomy, and characteristics of type, point size, pica measurement, serif and sans-serif styles are important to the graphic designer who uses words and letters in the design process. Students will consider typographic choices, issues of legibility & readability in design projects such as logos, letterhead, book covers, illuminated letters and magazine covers.


Copywriting

Learn to identify with the consumer and develop the creative writing skills used in advertising. These classes will help students with the use of planning strategies and the use of persuasive communication.


Photography I & II

Learn how to use a digital camera to compose quality commercial photographs. The use of natural lighting to enhance your subject matter is covered as well as cropping, scanning, and digital enhancement.


Storyboarding I & II

Storyboarding is the ability to break down a commercial or short story into separate scenes. These scenes are used as a guide for interactive media and motion pictures. Students will learn to identify key concepts and to break them down into the most important visual elements for screen shots. They will learn to draw these screen shots using colour markers and drawing techniques.


Business of Graphic Design

Learn the business of print advertising and develop your professional skills. Understand how to manage a small job, preparing an estimate, pricing, and sequencing of the job. Rules of professional conduct, intellectual property and copyright are covered. This course is designed to inspire students towards increased self-confidence and marketability.


Graphic Design Software

Students will use the following software programs: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Quark XPress, Macromedia Director, Flash, and Adobe GoLive. Students will learn to create and save files, change settings and operate standard word processing for the Macintosh platform. They will use Adobe Illustrator CS for illustration and logo creation; Adobe Photoshop CS to manipulate photos and images; and Adobe InDesign CS or QuarkXpress for layout and multi-page artwork. These programs are industry standard software and are essential tools for the modern graphic designer. Students will gain an understanding of interactive media as it applies to the world-wide web and CD-ROM. They will cover applications specific to interactive media such as Macromedia Director, Macromedia Flash, and Adobe Go-Live with an overview of Macromedia Dreamweaver.


Interactive Media I & II

Students will gain an understanding of interactive media as it applies to the world-wide web and CD-ROM. They cover applications specific to interactive media such as Macromedia Director, Macromedia Flash, Adobe GoLive and an overview of Macromedia Dreamweaver.


User Interface Design

This course focuses on user-centered design, known as Human-Computer Interaction or HCI. Understanding how the end user interfaces with interactive applications provides the necessary insight to create attractive and user-friendly multi-media experiences. Students learn to develop a systematic approach to the design process so that information in a multi-media format is easily accessible by end user.


Media Projects

Students will create "on line" Flash websites and CD-ROMS to showcase their interactive media skills.


Video Technologies

This class will cover video technologies as they apply to the world-wide web and interactive technologies. Subjects include web-casting, streaming video, video compression and optimization.


Sound Design

Students will learn to use sound as it applies to interactive media. They will learn to utilize and edit sound effects with tracks taken from sound libraries. Sound compression for the web, interactive technologies and their effectiveness in the work place will be discussed.


Studio Projects I & II

Studio projects emphasize the integration of design skills with learned software programs. Students will work on a variety of projects designed to stretch their use of imaginative design, with the use of various software programs.


Project Management

Learn how to interact with your client to manage their total advertising campaign. Starting with an overview of the project students learn how to work within a design team. They learn to break down a project into identifiable tasks creating a task list. Time lines and project schedules are developed and assigned to members of the design team.


Portfolio and Personal Promo I & II

Students learn how to assemble their portfolio in both print and multi-media and promote themselves in a professional manner.


Supervised Lab Time

Supervised computer lab time is made available for students throughout the term to work on school assignments outside of class time.
