Program Description
Landscape Drafting 1 & 2
Introduction to basic drafting skills, symbols and standards. Students will develop their drafting skills and apply them to a number of exercises and projects. In the second semester students will further refine their skills and apply them to elements of landscape construction and design.
Landscape Construction 1 & 2
Introduction to landscape construction, materials and the principles of surveying will be covered. In the second semester emphasis will be placed on more advanced landscape construction techniques. Explore the use of wood in the landscape and its application in decks, fences, and arbours. Other material applications for use in walls, patios, curbs and stairs will be also covered.
Plant Identification 1 & 2
An introduction to the world of plants and plant recognition. Field studies will be used to help the students visualize growth patterns of plant material. Later the students will design with plants, trees, shrubs and perennials for residential settings.
Colour Theory
Students will learn how to use colour in the landscape by understanding colour psychology, and the relationship of colour harmonies and contrasts.
Design Fundamentals 1
The fundamentals of design as applied to the landscape environment will be covered. Functional and design uses of landscape materials, methods of analysis as well as the language of design, developing the design and creating the planting plan.
Computer Aided Design 1
An introduction to the Macintosh computer. Students will learn how to communicate their ideas graphically using VectorWorks design software and will gain knowledge of the tools and usage, 3-dimensional drawing and plan drawings will be covered.
History 1
This course will cover the different kinds of design and styling solutions for the landscape. From modern, country and oriental styles to xeriscaping and the use of grasses within the context of a design. The history of landscape & garden design, as well as creative problem solving will be discussed.
Field Trips I & II
Field trips to industry related businesses expose students to products and finishes that are available locally. Sales representatives educate students in the practical application of materials used in landscape design.
Estimating & Administration
Students will develop an estimating system based on quantifying overhead recovery, material, labour, equipment and sub-contractor costs as well as profit margins.
